About Us | Electric bike sales & advice | E-bike sales & support

Here's why our e-bikes cost more than most you've seen on the internet...

High quality electric bikes offer much greater performance and value for money than cheaper "built to a price" models.

We don't sell cheap e-bikes. From experience gained in our early days in this business we know them to be unreliable, and even when they are working they lack the comfort,  performance and the advanced electronic security features that those living in cycling nations like Holland and Denmark now take for granted - should we Brits settle for less?

Buying a built-to-a-price e-bike is a false economy. They're no good for our planet, no good for us, and no good for our customers. Our European made e-bikes are not built to a price; they are built from the best materials to the highest quality standards and are designed to last a lifetime.

There's little point in buying an e-bike if you're only going to own it for 3 months! When trawling through the mass of e-bike suppliers’ websites - each proclaiming their electric bikes are better than the last - it can be very difficult to get a clear understanding of which one's right for you. Many people focus on battery capacity, or motor power, or weight, to gauge the merits of this metal horse or that.  But few stop to consider security; If all the bikes in Britain, manual and electric, had built-in electronic immobilisers like the Dutch Sparta and Koga e-bikes we sell and service at Justebikes, it would spell the end of a long and prosperous career for the thousands of cycle thieves up and down the land.

We've been selling and serving fine European electric bikes for seven years; all of our customers are pleased they chose quality over price. The overwhelming majority are still on their original battery four years after the standard two year battery warranty expired, and during those seven years only one of our customers has had their e-bike stolen. Within a week it was returned to her London home by the police. The thieves discovered that the unique electronic immobiliser and in-built mechanical lock included on all Sparta ION electric bikes rendered it unusable and therefore worthless, so they discarded it. The police soon found it, and from the Sparta e-bike's unique frame number they were quickly able to track down its rightful owner because when her Sparta was registered by us as part of our pre-delivery process it's frame number and her name and address was stored on the Central European Cycle Database.

Please look at this example of a Sparta to learn about the built-in mechanical and electronic security features.

My background is in transport engineering, specifically racing cars and aviation. In 1998 I was lucky enough to be living and working in New Zealand, designing and building competition cars. A fantastic place to spend a year or so and a fantastic job, but there was one BIG problem - the firm I worked for was at the top of one of Auckland’s highest hills!

After pedalling an old bone-shaker up the hill for a week or so I found myself in a scrap yard building an electric bike with a pair of Nissan truck cooling fan motors and a bundle of wires.

It worked; I could whiz up the hill in half the time and arrive fresh and invigorated from the ride, not exhausted, hot and sweaty. Our Kiwi cousins loved it too – at traffic lights windows would wind down with folk asking where they could buy one. There was something here.

Certain that Brits would also appreciate the benefits of electrocycling, on my return to England in 2000 I began to research the electric bike market. Four years later, spurred on by fatherhood and a desire to help develop a realistic low emission transport solution, I set up in business to hire, sell and service a range of electric bikes.

I soon realised that reliable high quality ebikes offered much greater performance and value for money in the long and medium term than those that were built to a price, so I hopped onboard a boat to Holland to see what the Dutch were doing. The e-bike was already a part of people’s everyday lives on the continent and the largest manufacturers, SPARTA, were my first port of call. I was immediately impressed with their vision, their ethos and the quality of their e-bikes, and the staff that build them.

Over the last seven years we have carefully assembled a comprehensive collection of Europe’s finest e-bikes. After Sparta we added another Dutch brand to our stable, KOGA - widely regarded as the Bentley of ebikes - followed by electric MTB makers HAIBIKE, and finally this year the beautiful e-bikes made by French company MOUSTACHE. We enjoy very strong relationships with our suppliers, sharing technical knowledge, experience, and crucially, feedback from our growing customer base.

These days on the local journeys I make I will see someone whizzing past on a Koga or Sparta. It’s very likely that this part of the Suffolk coast has a higher density of ebikes per square mile than anywhere else in the UK; in our small town of Leiston quite literally the butcher, the baker and candle-stick-maker have invested in an electric bike and most importantly they USE them, to get to work, to shop, to do the school run, for fun.

With London's Mayor Boris Johnson now activly supporting the uptake of e-bikes in the capital the same phenomena is beginging to take shape in London. In October 2012 we launched our first London shop at 318 Portobello Road - its been a great success!

I believe these are the first small waves of a sea change in the UK, because overall we’re behind the game - in continental Europe and the Far East ebikes are already mainstream. Global sales of e-bikes for 2010 exceeded 30 million units and its the fastest growing sector of the cycle industry.

We're a bit evangelical about e-bikes and want you to be too, to be so happy with your e-bike that you want to convert all your friends the benefits of electro-cycling and change the world! Time after time when I hear the expressions of surprise and pleasure from someone trying an e-bike for the first time, or see their wide smiles as they cruise back to our 500m2 showroom after their first test ride, I am re-convinced.

Risk Free Online Shopping & Quality After-sales Support:

This is no ordinary online store - there are a number of unique and important differences to the way we look after our customers. Since starting out in this business I have been in a great position to observe what people want from an e-bike and expect from their supplier, what works, and what doesn’t, and have benefited enormously from the all the feedback customers have given over the years. Our long-held belief in placing the customer experience at the heart of our business has been carried forward into our online shop Justebikes.co.uk.

  • We do not sell cheap e-bikes; from experience in our early days we know them to be unreliable and perform poorly: no good for our business, and no good for our customers. Our European made e-bikes are not built to a price; they are built to the finest quality standards and designed to last a lifetime.
  • Your e-bike won’t arrive in a non-descript brown box at some random time between 8am and 5pm; we will deliver it in person, fully assembled and tested, using our vehicles and our trained staff, and at a hour of your choosing.
  • We don’t leave you struggling to interpret poorly written user guides – our staff will spend time with you to ensure you are familiar and comfortable with all aspects of your e-bike’s operation.
  • For many people buying online can be a nerve-racking experience – not so with Justebikes: Once we are sure you are happy and confident with all aspects of your e-bike, and everything has been  adjusted perfectly to suit your size and preferred riding style, you will be able to test it up your hill, through your streets, and around your neighbourhood. If after this first test ride you are not completely satisfied, we will either return another day with a model that does meet your expectations and requirements, or give you a full refund – the choice is yours.
  • Having your e-bike delivered to your door by us is great - but what about servicing? Some of our customers enjoy the excuse to visit the beatuful Suffolk coast once a year to have their brakes checked or gears adjusted, but many just dont have the time. Fear not... for a small anual fee we will visit you twice a year  with our mobike workshop to service or carry out any repairs to your e-bike.

We’ve worked hard to transfer our knowledge and attention to detail to our website and hope you find it simple to navigate, informative, and helpful in your search for the perfect e-bike for you. If you have any questions or doubts – no matter how small – please don’t hesitate to contact me on 01728 830 817.

Our aim is to keep customers for life -  not just for the day of purchase - so if you enjoy the convenience of online shopping but would prefer the level of personal service normally only available from local specialists, then look no further.
